Gereon Theis
Cello
Gereon Theis was born in 1991 in a family of musicians and started to play the cello at the age of six with Lijerka Honda-Rosenberg.
Since 2005 he regularly attended masterclasses with David Gregorian, Alexander Hülshoff, Manuel Fischer-Diskau, Sylvie Basset, Maria de Macedo, Dimitri Dichtiar and Wolfgang Boettcher.
He won several prizes at the competitions of „Jugend musiziert“ in Germany.
In 2007 he got accepted to the „Detmolder Hochbegabtenzentrum“ with whom he gave concerts in Halle/Saale, Vienna and Italy in the following years.
In 2009 he continued his studies an the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf with Prof. Gotthard Popp. From 2011 on he received tuition from Prof. Alexander Gebert at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold where he successfully completed his Bachelor Degree in 2016.
In 2018 he has completing his Master degree with Prof. Young-Chang Cho at the Folkwang Universität in Essen.
Since 2018 he studied with Oliver Wille (Kuss Quartet) at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien in Hannover.
He has been a member of the Chamber orchestra „pro atribus“ (Hanover) for many years.
Chamber music has been a matter close to his heart for many years.
In October 2015 he recorded the first string sextet by Johannes Brahms with artists such as Thomas Christian and Diemut Poppen for the „70 Jahre NRW“ disc.
Furthermore he is member of the „Vigato Quartet“ which was founded in 2010.
The string quartet was inspired by working with the Auryn Quartett and the Belcea Quartet as well as Heime Müller (Artemis Quartett), Tim Vogler (Vogler Quartett), Bernhard Schmidt (Mandelring Quartett) and Dirk Mommertz (Fauré Quartett). Master classes and workshops enriched the ensemble’s musical development.
In 2017 the first CD of Vigato, together with the harpist Rebekka Frömling, was released by PASCHENrecords. In the same year the Vigato quartet had the opportunity to work together with Eberhard Feltz during the chamber music master classes in Frenswegen. From that on the musicians regularly continue to work with him in different courses.
The Vigato Quartet is interested in playing contemporary music. Manfred Trojahn, the well-known german composer, intensively worked with Vigato on his first string quartet, composed in 1978. As a result of that cooperation this composition was revised in 2017.
Further in 2018 the Vigato Quartet won a scholarship for the chamber music association ,Villa Musica’ and the ,Werner Richard – Dr. Carl Dörken’ foundation. These foundations are supporting the quartet until today.
Now in 2020 the Vigato Quartet will play a concert tour named ,Best of NRW’ (North Rine-Westphalia) including scholarships and concerts in different places in NRW, like ,Beethoven Haus’ in Bonn.
In January 2020 the Quartet have been invited to join ,Le Dimore del Quartetto’.
Since 2019 Gereon Theis is Sony Classical artist and participated in numerous albums.
He is member of the PROmeTheus Quartet since 2015.
